Apparently New Jersey has just approved a new offshore wind farm.
The state program provides aid for up to 350 megawatts, or enough continuous power for about 125,000 homes. Sunday, October 5. 2008Giant Wind Turbine Explodes During High WindsEver wonder how much energy there is in the wind? Here is the Snopes article that verifies this video of a giant wind turbine in Denmark getting wrecked in a huge storm. Wednesday, October 1. 2008Young galaxy's magnetism surprises astronomers![]() The Article To make their measurement, the scientists studied radio waves emitted by an even more-distant object, the quasar 3C 286, behind the protogalaxy. As these electromagnetic waves passed through the protogalaxy, some were absorbed by Hydrogen atoms in the protogalaxy. Normally, the atoms would absorb only a single, specific frequency. However, because the atoms were affected by the protogalaxy's magnetic field, they absorbed at two closely-spaced frequencies. This phenomenon, called the Zeeman Effect, allows scientists to measure the strength of the magnetic field affecting the Hydrogen gas through which the waves passed. Wikipedia Article on the Zeeman Effect Sunday, September 28. 2008Earth's Magnetic Field Reversals Illuminated By Lava Flows Study
ScienceDaily (2008-09-26) -- Earth's north magnetic pole is shifting and weakening. Ancient lava flows are guiding a better understanding of what generates and controls the Earth's magnetic field -- and what may drive it to occasionally reverse direction. Current evidence suggests we are now approaching a transitional state because the main magnetic field is relatively weak and rapidly decreasing, researchers say. While the last polarity reversal occurred several hundred thousand years ago, the next might come within only a few thousand years.

ScienceDaily (2008-09-15) -- The thought of a bus moving along city streets while its driver has both hands off the wheel is alarming. But a special bus steers not by a driver, but by a magnetic guidance system developed by engineers at the University of California, Berkeley, with remarkable precision.
The Article In the system demonstrated today, sensors mounted under the bus measured the magnetic fields created from the roadway magnets, which were placed beneath the pavement surface 1 meter apart along the center of the lane. Wednesday, September 24. 2008

It was a very innovative way to mask the amount of horse power by restricting how far the throttle would open. Here are a couple of articles explaining the incident and the responses. It is more of electromagnets but still very cool! Professor P.J. Hore from Oxford has recently found the mechanism that may explain the abilities of migratory birds and other animals to sense the earth's magnetic field. Prof. Hore has also been looking at the effects of magnetic fields on chemical reactions.
Wednesday, May 28. 2008Magnetic Nanoparticles in Cancer TreatmentFrom the Article: Magnetic nanoparticles (with a size of some few to several hundred nanometres) are a new, promising means of fighting cancer. The particles serve as a carrier for drugs: "loaded" with the drugs, the nanoparticles are released into the blood stream, where they move until they come under the influence of a targeting magnetic field which holds them on to the tumour – until the drug has released its active agent. Science editor at the Telegraph, Roger Highfield, recently volunteered to subject his brain to intense magnetic fields. The research showed that a sufficiently strong, precisely directed magnetic field can interrupt the parts of the brain responsible for speech.
Wednesday, May 28. 2008Magnetic Robots by VEX![]() For those who don't know, VEX Robotics has offered some very cool DIY robot assembly kits for quite a while. Now, they have expanded their product offerings with their M2 Magnetic Climbing Robot. The M2 is an update to the original M1 The M2 uses 88 of our B120601 to magnetically adhere the treads to any metal surface as you can see below. Yes, that is a robot climbing straight up the wall. Watch the video, you will be amazed!

Now Holden Special Vehicles (HSV), Buick, Audi, and Ferrari all have MagneRide magnetic suspensions from Delphi. From the article: The magnetic system uses a synthetic magneto-rheological (MR) oil in which teensy-weensy iron particles - much smaller in diameter than the width of a human hair - float about at random. Hrmm.. sounds like FerroFluid. On a smooth, straight road the iron particles are pretty much left to do their own thing in free-flowing oil, but under cornering forces, for example, they get zapped by the magnetic field and jump into line to change the consistency of the oil to that of molasses or peanut butter to firm up damping. It is this continuously variable damping force that adapts to changing road surfaces without the delays of conventional mechanical systems. Link to the MagneRide page by Delphi Link to a White Paper by LORD (who developed some of the MR damping technology used by Delphi). |
